Where does the gingham pattern come from?
When you hear the word Vichy, some think of the spa town, others of the jingle that sticks in your head, and the most food-loving among us think of the red and white tablecloth and little mint candies!
Today, we're going to talk about the famous checked pattern. Believe it or not, the gingham pattern we all know actually comes from the town it's named after. The gingham pattern is believed to have appeared during the reign of Napoleon III. Empress Eugénie is said to have started the gingham trend by bringing this checked fabric back with her after a stay in the town.
For a long time known as the pattern of a picnic tablecloth, it was at the beginning of the 20th century that the gingham print really took off. It was notably the icon Brigitte Bardot who made gingham famous thanks to numerous appearances in gingham outfits.
How is the gingham print made?
The weaving of gingham is quite particular. Indeed, it is made with carded or spun cotton threads. The pattern consists of an alternation of two-color bands and chains of the same shade. The size of the squares in the gingham pattern is often between 8 and 15 mm.
